Biotin: Your Very Own Energizer

Author: kirsten olivares

A water- soluble vitamin that belongs to the B complex group, Biotin is long having been reported that it is essential to the body. Its history began when several nutritional experiments revealed that there are certain foods that are capable of treating conditions such as scaly dermatitis and even hair loss.

According to a study conducted to lab rats. There were changes on these conditions was noted as the rats where fed dried egg white. It was discovered that the egg white contained avidin which then aids in binding of biotin.

Biotin serves as an energy booster somehow; therefore it is abundant in the brain, muscles and liver. Its purpose is similar to that of thiamine, riboflavin and niacin.

2 Basically it is a coenzyme or something that promotes activity of an enzyme but does not act as a catalyst.3 It promotes production of glucose from other substances such as amino acids and lactate.

Mostly, this happens during fasting or exercising over a long period of time. Moreover it is also important in creating fatty acids from excessive glucose or amino acids. This can also assist in the breakdown of some fatty acids and amino acids which is important in energy production.

3 The importance of biotin to the body is emphasized when going through a condition brought by biotin deficiency. Some who acquired this are pretty healthy individuals before. The manifestations are almost the same for the "victims". Great effect is seen to skin and hair appearance, central and peripheral nervous systems or the intestinal tract. Known causes of this illness are eating too much raw egg whites, TPN or total parenteral nutrition therapy, anticonvulsant therapy, prolonged intake of antibiotics and genetic mutation.

4 Recommended sources of biotin are foods like liver, peanuts, cauliflower and cheese. Egg yolks are rich source but raw eggs are found to have this avidin that, as mentioned, prevents proper absorption of biotin. It is important thereof that cooked eggs are consumed instead. It was known that heat alters avidin. Since there is no profound study to come up with a credible list of biotin source from food it is good that one should consider biotin supplementation.

5 There had been an outburst of the demand of biotin among men of certain age group due to the popular usage against hair loss. However if you are not one of them you can still endeavour on this. If you are a diabetic, someone who wants healthy hair and nails or an average person; there is a need for biotin in our body, it is prone to depletion.
